Hi, my name is Milan, and I was born at 18:02 Australian EST, on September the 25th, 2002, at Jessie McPherson Private Hospital, within the Monash Medical Centre. My ecstatically proud parents are Gordana and Milosh Ivanovich, and my elated grandparents are called Mile and Bina (on mum's side) and Vladimir and Slavica (on dad's side).

How did I get my name? As in the case of my brother, my mum and dad had an agreement, where she was going to pick girls' names and he was going to pick boys' names. My mum's scheme revolved around names she had heard in the past and liked, whereas my dad's choices were based on Historical Serbian personalities from a great period of Serbian history - the Kosovo Epoch. My name stems from a famous and much loved Duke and Knight of the Serbian Realm in the 14th Century A.D., Toplica Milan, who along with his contemporaries Kosancic Ivan, Obilic Milos may be thought of as the equivalent of King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table.

To illustrate the significance of, and depth of feeling for Toplica Milan among Serbs, let us examine a couple of excerpts from one of the most well-known and epic Serbian poems of all time, "The Kosovo Maiden" (full reproduction may be found in Hugo Roth's book "Kosovo Origins" ):

Excerpt 1

When Lazar and all the Serbian army
There the Holy Sacrament have taken,
Three Voyvodas last of all did enter:
First of them was Milos, the great warrior,
Ivan Kosancic was close behind him,
And the third, Toplica Milan, followed.

Excerpt 2

Pray to God for me, dear Maid, my sister,
That I may come back again in safety.
And that all good fortune may attend thee
I will marry thee to my friend Milan,
Him whom God has given me as brother,
My friend Milan who is my sworn brother.
In God's name and good Saint John's, I promise
I myself will give thee to the bridegroom.

Excerpt 3

"Then Toplica Milan follows after,
In the whole world no more splendid hero;
On the ground his clanking saber trailing,
Silken cap with proudly waving feathers,
Many-colored mantle on his shoulders
And around his neck a silken kerchief,
On his hand a golden ring is shining
And upon his arm a golden bracelet.
Then he gazes round and looks upon me,
From his arm he takes the golden bracelet,
Takes it off and gives it to me, saying:"
"Here, oh Maiden, is my golden bracelet,
By it thou wilt have me in remembrance.
Now, dear Maid, must I go forth to perish
There where camps our noble Prince's army;
Pray to God for me, dear soul, my darling,
That I may come back again in safety;
Then, dear Maid, that good luck may attend thee,
I will take thee for my true beloved."

Another very famous and respected Milan exists in Serbian History - King Milan Obrenovic, 1854–1901, prince (1868–82) and king (1882–89) of Serbia. He was educated in Paris, and at the Congress of Berlin (1878) he secured Austrian support and obtained European recognition of the full independence of Serbia from the Ottoman Empire.
